Bhubaneswar, the capital of the State of Orissa, is located on the eastern part of India. The administrative
jurisdiction of the Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC) spreads over an extent of 135 sq.km. As
per census 2001, the city has a population of 648,032 with a growth rate of 57.46 percent during the
The Holly city of Puri is located at a distance of about 64 km from Bhubaneswar. The Master Plan
Area of Puri covers the Municipal area as well as 16 villages of Puri Sadar Police Station. The Master Plan
area is about 63.6 sq.kms and stretches along the seaâshore measuring about 20.35 Kms. The Municipal
Area is about 16.84 sq. Kms. and stretches along the seaâshore measuring about 6.59 Kms. The entire
Municipal area has been divided into 34 units and 30 wards. As per 2001 census, population of Puri
Municipal Area is 1,57,837 lakhs.
Public Transport in Bhubaneswar and Puri is largely supplied by Auto Rickshaws that operate on various
roads or routes along with some limited Town Bus service. The rapid increase in personalized vehicles
coupled with lack of formal public transport is aggravating the traffic & transportation problem in the
respective cities. To improve the overall mobility of the respective cities in general and public transport
system in both the cities in particular, Housing &Urban Development Department, Govt. of Orissa with
assistance from Ministry of Urban Development (MoUD), Government of India is ntroducing City Bus
Service in Bhubaneswar and Puri Jawahar Lal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JnNURM) scheme .
